Brad and Caroline Cowan are the owners of Cowan Horse Adventures and come with a lifetime of riding experience.
Brad was born into a ranching family in southern Arizona and has always had his own horse. Brad is a skilled roper and is a hand when it comes to working cows and handling horses.
Caroline was a US Air Force brat and although rode some as a child has had constant horse ownership since 1979. Caroline’s early training was English over fences this morphed into carriage driving and competitions.
From general trails / horseback riding, to roping and working cattle, carriage rides and competitions, our horses are trained in different disciplines. We offer our guests a choice of tacking up the horses with English or Western equipment. The horses are stabled at our house on five acres and spend most of their time loafing in the turnout. We introduce new things to them from time to time, this allows for the horses to be inquisitive and not scared of unknown things.
One of the questions we get is why don’t we shoe the horses. As you can see by the photo gallery pictures we live in a very rocky area. We have found that leaving the hooves unencumbered with metal shoes allows the horses to toughen up their feet. They wear the edges off as they would naturally in the wild. We do trim from time to time to keep the hooves balanced and tidy. We do use the EASYCARE, Easyboots on some of the horses if the chosen trail is extremely rocky. Our guests have commented on how sure footed and steady our horses are in the rocks. They can’t do that if they have sore feet so we must be doing something right.
Caroline and Brad also enjoy other activities such as snow skiing and snorkeling / scuba diving. Not having much snow or open water here in Tucson we also enjoy traveling. We have skied most of the Western US states and did some diving and snorkeling in the Hawaiian Islands and Australia. And yes we have also paid to go on trail rides on rented horses in Australia and New Zealand.
